A new investigation has linked 61 Nigerian public officials and politically exposed individuals to about $271 million worth of property holdings in the United States. The report examines U.S. property records and traces assets connected to Nigerian officials, their relatives and associates, highlighting the scale of wealth held overseas by people who have served in or had close links to public office.
The investigation forms part of a wider effort by Premium Times and international investigative partners to trace Nigerian public figures' overseas assets. Previous investigations have identified U.S. properties connected to former officials such as Abdulrasheed Maina and Dibu Ojerinde, including assets acquired during periods when Nigerian authorities alleged that public funds had been misappropriated. In some cases, the properties were not included in Nigerian asset-recovery proceedings.
The findings raise questions about asset declaration, financial transparency and the ability of Nigerian authorities to recover suspected proceeds of corruption held abroad. However, being linked to or owning a U.S. property does not by itself establish that the property was purchased with illicit funds. Individual cases therefore need to be distinguished between documented property ownership, allegations of wrongdoing and matters that have been established by a court.
