The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is the highest professional distinction conferred on legal practitioners in the country, roughly equivalent to the "silk" title of Queen's/King's Counsel in other common law jurisdictions. Conferment is handled by the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and successful nominees are formally sworn in at the start of each new legal year, giving them privileges such as reserved seating in court, the right to wear a distinct silk gown, and greater standing in the profession.
The swearing-in of this year's set of 68 SANs, conducted by CJN Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun at the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year, has been reported in near-identical terms by Tribune Online, Vanguard and Punch, all confirming the number and the presiding officer. None of the reports yet carry further details such as the names of the newly conferred SANs, the criteria or vetting process applied for this cycle, or remarks made by the CJN or other dignitaries at the ceremony.
