The case was heard at a High Court in the Idemili Judicial Division in Anambra State, where Justice A.O. Okuma found Ikechukwu Okoye guilty of murdering the wife of a family friend and stealing her property. In handing down the death sentence, the court rejected the defence's argument that the killing was committed in self-defence, a plea that is often raised in homicide trials but requires the accused to show the force used was proportionate to an imminent threat.
Death sentences by hanging remain on Nigeria's statute books for capital offences such as murder, even though actual executions are rare, with convicts typically remaining on death row for extended periods pending appeals or gubernatorial action on execution warrants.
