Rivers State's political landscape has been unusually volatile in the run-up to 2027, marked by a protracted power struggle within the ruling PDP establishment and a federal government intervention that saw a state of emergency and the suspension of elected officials for several months. That turbulence has opened space for smaller parties and political blocs to reposition themselves ahead of the next governorship contest, with defections and realignments reshaping the field.
The African Democratic Congress's move to formally unveil a governorship campaign council, with a former senator as chairman, signals an early and structured push to contest the seat. Both Punch and Leadership agree on the core facts — the unveiling took place in Rivers State and Andrew Uchendu was named chairman — while Leadership adds detail on the broader organisational structure unveiled alongside the leadership. Neither report yet clarifies the party's full slate of candidates, its campaign strategy, or how it intends to challenge the dominant parties in the state.
