FG ends 17-year blackout in Gombe communities

Many rural communities across northern Nigeria have gone without grid electricity for years, even decades, due to the high cost of extending transmission infrastructure to sparsely populated or remote areas. This has pushed the Federal Government and development partners to increasingly turn to solar mini-grids and off-grid renewable solutions as a faster, cheaper alternative to reach underserved communities, in line with Nigeria's broader rural electrification and energy access goals under agencies like the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Both Tribune Online and Vanguard report that the Federal Government has now restored power to Tallasse in Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State after a 17-year blackout, through a solar mini-grid project. Tribune specifies the installation as a 1MW solar mini-grid supported by a 2.4MWh battery storage system, while Vanguard additionally notes plans for a wider 16MW mini-grid network spanning four communities in the state. Details such as project cost, implementing partners, and the timeline for extending the initiative to the other three communities have not yet been reported.
