Getty Images to go private after bankruptcy filing

Getty Images is one of the world's largest stock photo and editorial imagery agencies, supplying pictures and video to newsrooms, advertisers and businesses globally, including partnerships with major wire services like AFP. The company has carried a heavy debt load since a series of private equity buyouts and its 2022 merger with a special-purpose acquisition company that took it public, and it has more recently faced pressure from the rise of AI-generated imagery, which has disrupted the traditional stock-photo licensing business.

A "prepackaged" bankruptcy allows a company to negotiate a restructuring plan with key creditors before formally filing, so it can move through Chapter 11 proceedings quickly rather than operating under prolonged court supervision. Coverage agrees Getty is using this route to shed debt and return to private ownership, with the Getty family and Koch Equity Development injecting new equity, but reports have not yet detailed how the deal affects day-to-day operations, jobs, or Getty's existing content partnerships going forward.
