Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has rejected FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s claim that the Federal Government provided ₦50 billion to support the upgrade of Ibadan’s Ladoke Akintola International Airport. Speaking at a political town hall meeting in Katsina on September 22, Makinde said the claim was false and maintained that the airport project was being funded entirely by the Oyo State Government.
The dispute follows Wike’s appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout on September 21, where he said President Bola Tinubu’s administration had made about ₦50 billion available to support Makinde and the airport project. Wike presented the funding as part of the Federal Government’s support for Makinde, while Makinde has denied receiving the money for the airport.
The disagreement comes amid renewed political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with Makinde now seeking the presidency under the Allied Peoples Movement while Wike remains a senior figure in the Tinubu administration. The immediate issue is therefore a factual dispute over the source and destination of the alleged ₦50 billion, with the two politicians giving different accounts.
