Kylian Mbappé has said he hopes to dedicate the 2026 Ballon d’Or to Africa if he wins the prestigious award. Speaking to RFI, the Real Madrid and France forward highlighted his strong connection with his African heritage, with his father from Cameroon and his mother having Algerian roots. He said he has maintained his connection with Africa despite being born and raised in France.
Mbappé also thanked African supporters and journalists for the backing he has received during his career. His comments come as voting for the Ballon d’Or is taking place, with African journalists forming part of the 100-member voting panel. Some commentators have interpreted the timing as an appeal for African support, although there is no established evidence that this was his intention.
The 27-year-old has never won the Ballon d’Or but enters this year’s race after an outstanding individual season. He was the leading scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the 2026 World Cup, although Real Madrid did not win the major club titles and France were eliminated in the World Cup semi-finals. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on October 26.
