The Nigeria Customs Service has long battled the smuggling of subsidised petroleum products across Nigeria's porous land borders, particularly in border states like Adamawa that share frontiers with Cameroon. Fuel smuggling thrives on price differentials between Nigeria and neighbouring countries, draining revenue, fuelling local scarcity, and undermining government efforts to curb economic leakages through initiatives such as the NCS's special anti-smuggling operations.
Operation Whirlwind is one of several task forces the Customs Service has deployed to intercept contraband and smuggled petroleum products along Nigeria's northern and eastern border communities. Both Tribune Online and Punch report the same seizure of over 38,000 litres of PMS in Adamawa, with Punch additionally citing a value of N63 million for the product. Details such as the exact border communities involved, suspects arrested, and the fate of the impounded product have not yet been reported.
