Issa Aremu, Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), has called for a comprehensive remodelling and modernisation of the institute as part of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary reflections. He said ageing infrastructure, inadequate funding, increased use of the facilities and technological changes have overstretched the institute.
Aremu said upgrading MINILS would strengthen its role as a national centre for labour education, industrial relations, social dialogue and productivity development. He also argued that greater investment in the institute would help improve workers’ skills and contribute to industrial harmony and economic development, while calling for broader labour-friendly policies including better wages, pension payments and public-sector employment.
