Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has granted pardon and other forms of executive clemency to 101 inmates and convicts as part of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebrations. Of the beneficiaries, 94 were granted mercy while seven had their sentences remitted. The decision followed recommendations from the state’s Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed their cases and considered factors including age, health, conduct, rehabilitation, time served and family circumstances.
The governor described the action as an exercise of constitutional compassion for deserving cases, stressing that the pardons don't lessen the seriousness of the offences committed. He urged those released or given sentence relief to treat the opportunity as a second chance and called on parents, community leaders, religious organisations and youth groups to support efforts to reduce crime in Kogi State.
