North Korea under Kim Jong Un has steadily expanded its military capabilities despite international sanctions, pressing ahead with missile tests and defence modernisation drives that Pyongyang frames as necessary deterrence against the United States and South Korea. Calls for troops to embrace rigorous training and ideological loyalty are a recurring feature of Kim's public messaging, often delivered at party or military gatherings and amplified through state media such as KCNA, which rarely allows independent verification of the claims made.
