The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has unveiled a new security framework for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry to strengthen the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, illegal refining and other…
Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have long plagued Nigeria's energy sector, costing the country billions of dollars in lost revenue annually and undermining crude output targets set by OPEC. The problem has been linked to a web of illegal refining camps, complicity by some security operatives, and vandalism of pipelines operated by both the state oil company and international oil firms, prompting successive administrations to deploy military task forces and private pipeline protection contracts with limited lasting success.
The Office of the National Security Adviser, under Nuhu Ribadu, has in recent years taken a more central role in coordinating the security response to the crisis alongside the military, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company and oil-producing communities. Coverage across outlets agrees that a new framework has been introduced to standardise how surveillance, arrests, detention and recovery of stolen crude are handled, though details on funding, implementing agencies and timelines for rollout have not yet been reported.
