Obi: Nigeria’s Problem Is Leadership Failure, Not Lack of Resources

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), used his Independence Day address to argue that Nigeria’s main challenge is leadership failure rather than a lack of resources. He highlighted poverty, insecurity, unemployment, hunger, poor healthcare and millions of children out of school, citing figures of more than 140 million Nigerians living in poverty and over 18 million children out of school. He also pointed to conditions he encountered during a visit to an IDP camp in Sokoto.

Obi called for a shift towards accountable and measurable governance, with greater emphasis on security, education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing and job creation. He said that, if elected, his administration would seek to make Nigeria more productive and ensure displaced Nigerians can safely return home. He ended on a message of hope, saying a new Nigeria is possible through responsible leadership and citizens demanding accountability.
