The proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone would place Ogun State in direct competition with Lagos as a maritime and logistics hub, with the port's four-kilometre berth and 18-metre draft designed to accommodate larger vessels than existing facilities and pull cargo traffic away from the congested Lagos corridor. The MoUs were signed in Paris, where President Tinubu was on hand to pitch DP World and other investors on regulatory clarity and policy stability, signalling the federal government's direct involvement in courting the Dubai-based ports operator for the project.
At $7 billion, the scale of the commitment underscores how much is riding on the deal for Ogun's economic diversification plans, though the announcement of MoUs marks an early stage — a statement of intent rather than a guarantee of construction, financing, or timelines.
