President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on his 70th birthday, saying their political differences will not diminish his affection for the former Minister of…
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a two-time Kano State governor, former federal minister and leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, has long been one of northern Nigeria's most influential political figures, commanding a large grassroots following in Kano. He contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), positioning himself as a rival to President Bola Tinubu, and the two have at times been on opposing sides of Nigeria's shifting party alliances.
Despite this rivalry, goodwill messages between political leaders on milestone occasions such as birthdays are a routine feature of Nigerian public life, often used to project unity and statesmanship above partisan contests. Tinubu's message, issued to mark Kwankwaso's 70th birthday, frames their relationship in personal rather than political terms, though it comes amid ongoing speculation about Kwankwaso's role and alliances ahead of future elections. Both Vanguard and Leadership report the president's remarks in similar terms, with neither outlet detailing further specifics of the message beyond the shared sentiment.
