Plateau records 11,000 TB cases in 2026
By Golok Nanmwa JOS — Plateau State has recorded an estimated 11,000 tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2026, with 2,047 patients identified and placed on treatment between July and September. The Monitoring and Evaluation…
Tuberculosis remains one of Nigeria's most persistent public health challenges, with the country consistently ranked among the countries with the highest TB burden globally by the World Health Organisation. The disease, which is airborne and spread through prolonged contact with infected persons, is both preventable and curable, but gaps in case detection, diagnostic capacity and treatment adherence continue to undermine control efforts, particularly in states with large rural populations and limited access to health facilities.
The figures from Plateau State were disclosed by Yohanna Bot, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the state's Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, who gave a breakdown showing 2,047 patients detected and placed on treatment between July and September alone. All three reports cite the same official and the same case numbers, pointing to a single briefing or presentation as the source. None of the accounts yet detail the methodology behind the 11,000 estimate for the full year, how it compares with previous years' figures, or what resources are being deployed to close the gap between estimated and confirmed cases.
