Cases of school transport staff abusing their position of trust around minors have repeatedly surfaced across Nigeria, fuelling public debate over the vetting of drivers and other non-teaching staff who have direct, unsupervised access to children. Such incidents often reignite calls for schools to conduct background checks and for state governments to enforce child-protection guidelines for private and public school operators, including transport providers like the one involved in this case.
The outlets agree on the core facts: a Delta State school bus driver, identified as Onome (Lucky) Ughagha, 28, has been arrested over the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a 14-year-old female student in Sapele. Leadership adds that the suspect allegedly demanded something from the victim or her family, though the full detail is not given in the available extract. None of the reports yet specify the date of the alleged offence, how the arrest was made, the current state of the police investigation, or whether formal charges have been filed in court.
