Cases of newborns abandoned in uncompleted buildings, bushes, drainage channels or dumpsites are reported with troubling regularity across Nigeria, often linked to unwanted pregnancies, stigma around teenage or out-of-wedlock births, and the activities of baby-trafficking rings that coerce young mothers into giving up their children. Plateau State, with its scattered mining communities and informal settlements, has seen similar incidents before, and such babies frequently rely on the chance intervention of passers-by or children at play before they are handed over to hospitals, police or child welfare authorities.
Both reports agree the baby was found alive in an uncompleted building within a mining site in Naraguta, Jos North, and that community members raised the alarm. Premium Times adds the detail that the infant still had its umbilical cord attached and was discovered along Ardo Lane after children heard him crying, suggesting he had been abandoned only hours earlier. Neither account yet identifies the mother, explains the circumstances of the abandonment, or confirms what authorities — police, NSCDC or hospital officials — have done to take the baby into protective custody, leaving the child's immediate welfare and any investigation into the case still unclear.
