Simeone explains Lookman’s half-time substitution
Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone says managing player effort influenced his decision to substitute Ademola Lookman at half-time against Espanyol. Read More:…
Ademola Lookman joined Atlético Madrid this season after a standout campaign at Atalanta, where he was named CAF African Footballer of the Year on the back of his Europa League final hat-trick. The Nigerian forward's move to a traditional European heavyweight was seen as a major step up, with Nigerian fans closely tracking his playing time and integration under manager Diego Simeone, who is known for his rigid tactical system and squad rotation at Atlético.
The latest half-time withdrawal against Espanyol has renewed questions about how Lookman fits into Simeone's plans, following a similar early substitution earlier in the season. Simeone's comments, attributing the change to managing player workload, offer his explanation, but the underlying issue of Lookman's reduced minutes compared to his profile at Atalanta remains a point of scrutiny for pundits and supporters alike.
