Yobe State, in Nigeria's North-East, remains one of the areas most affected by the long-running Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency, with military convoys and patrol routes along the fringes of the Sambisa-Lake Chad corridor frequently targeted in ambushes and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks. Such assaults typically begin with a bomb blast disabling a lead vehicle before gunmen open fire on the rest of the convoy, a tactic that has repeatedly inflicted heavy casualties on troops despite years of military operations aimed at degrading the insurgents' capacity.
Both Vanguard and Tribune Online report that at least six soldiers, including a major, were killed in Monday's attack, with Vanguard adding that "scores" of suspected militants were also feared dead in the ensuing clash. Details such as the exact location, the unit involved, and an official military statement have yet to be confirmed, as accounts so far rely on local and security sources rather than a formal Army or Defence Headquarters communique.
