The article examines how artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape legal services in Nigeria, particularly through legal research, document analysis, automation, and other tools that can improve efficiency and reduce the time lawyers spend on routine work. AI could also help widen access to legal services by lowering some costs, but its adoption raises concerns about accuracy, professional judgment and the handling of confidential client information.
A major issue is the regulatory framework surrounding AI use in legal practice. Nigeria does not yet have a dedicated AI law, so existing legislation on data protection, intellectual property, cybersecurity and consumer protection applies to many AI-related activities. For example, the Nigeria Data Protection Act places restrictions on significant decisions made solely through automated processing, while copyright law creates potential questions around AI-generated content and the use of copyrighted material to train AI systems.
The article therefore presents AI as a tool to support, rather than replace, legal professionals. Lawyers and law firms will need to understand the technology while maintaining human oversight, ethical standards, confidentiality and professional responsibility. The broader challenge for Nigeria is developing appropriate regulation and skills so that the legal sector can benefit from AI without compromising clients' rights or the integrity of legal services.
