Lakurawa is a relatively new armed group that has entrenched itself in forested areas along Nigeria's border with Niger Republic, particularly in Sokoto and Kebbi states, where it has been accused of imposing levies on residents, attacking communities and clashing with local vigilantes. The Nigerian military formally listed it as a proscribed terrorist organisation and has since launched sustained operations, including through Operation Fansan Yamma under the Joint Task Force North West, to dislodge the group from its forest hideouts in the North-West region, which has long battled banditry and kidnapping-for-ransom gangs.
Both Vanguard and Tribune Online attribute the operation to Operation Fansan Yamma troops and describe an assault on a Lakurawa enclave in Waria Forest, Tangaza Local Government Area, resulting in neutralised fighters and recovered weapons; Tribune additionally reports that camps were destroyed. Neither report, as covered, gives casualty figures, the number of troops involved, or details on any arrests or ongoing pursuit of fleeing members, leaving the full scale and aftermath of the raid yet to be clarified by the military.
