Two persons have died and 18 communities sacked in a devastating flood that submerged parts of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Nawani Aboki,…
Nigeria's North-Central region, including Nasarawa State, sits within the Benue River basin and has long been prone to seasonal flooding during the rainy season, particularly when the river overflows its banks or dams release excess water. Flooding incidents in recent years have repeatedly displaced thousands of residents, destroyed farmland and homes, and strained the capacity of state and federal emergency agencies such as NEMA and state emergency management authorities to respond.
In this case, officials attribute the disaster in Doma Local Government Area's Eke Development Area to torrential rainfall combined with the Benue River overflowing, submerging parts of the area and affecting at least 18 communities. All three reports cite the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Nawani Aboki, as the source confirming two deaths and the scale of displacement. None of the reports yet detail the number of people displaced, the extent of property or crop losses, or what relief and rescue measures are being deployed by state or federal authorities.
