US Commends NDLEA Over Busts of Mexican Meth Labs as Marwa Seeks Continued Support
The United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) for Africa and the Middle East, Michael Gonzales has commended the National Drug Law
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has in recent years stepped up operations against industrial-scale methamphetamine production in Nigeria, with several busts linked to international cartels, including Mexican drug trafficking networks that have sought new routes and manufacturing bases in West Africa as enforcement tightens elsewhere. Nigeria's position as a transit and, increasingly, production point for synthetic drugs destined for Asian, European and American markets has made it a focus of US counter-narcotics cooperation, channelled through the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), which provides training, funding and intelligence support to partner agencies across Africa.
The visit by a senior INL official to praise NDLEA's dismantling of meth labs underscores Washington's interest in curbing drug flows that it says ultimately reach American communities, while NDLEA chairman Buba Marwa has consistently used such engagements to press for sustained technical and financial backing. Both outlets agree on the US commendation and the meth lab busts, but neither report details the scale of the operations, the specific labs or quantities seized, or the precise nature and timeline of any additional support being requested or pledged.
