Zacharie Boucher spotted in training to face Nigeria despite reported exclusion from Madagascar squad
Zacharie Boucher trains with Madagascar in Nigeria despite calls for his removal, as French identity controversy resurfaces before AFCON 2027 qualifier match.
Madagascar national team goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher was seen training with the squad in Nigeria on Monday, shutting down widespread rumors that he had been axed from the team. The 34-year-old shot-stopper took part in a 15-minute tactical drill in Uyo alongside fellow goalkeepers Geordan Dupire and Nina Rakotoasimbola as the squad prepares for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The controversy around Boucher kicked off right after coach Corentin Martins handed him his first national call-up. An old 2018 interview resurfaced where Boucher stated he viewed himself strictly as French, had never felt Malagasy, and would turn down any invitation to represent Madagascar. That sparked an immediate uproar among the fanbase, with many demanding he be dropped before the team flew to Nigeria. Despite the intense pushback and circulating reports claiming he was out, his presence on the pitch confirmed he is still very much part of the squad.
