Nnamdi Kanu: Real fact emerges on Goodluck Jonathan's 'visit' to IPOB leader in Sokoto prison
Fresh online posts have sparked questions over whether former President Goodluck Jonathan visited convicted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu in prison in Sokoto.
The report examines a viral claim that former President Goodluck Jonathan visited Nnamdi Kanu in a Sokoto correctional facility. A Facebook post published on September 7, 2026, circulated a photograph allegedly showing the two men together during a prison visit and attracted thousands of reactions, comments and shares. The claim gained attention because Kanu remains in custody following his 2025 conviction and life sentence on terrorism-related charges.
The background is Kanu’s continued detention in Sokoto and the ongoing public debate over his legal and political situation. Jonathan has previously been linked to efforts to discuss Kanu’s detention. In October 2025, activist Omoyele Sowore said he met Jonathan in Abuja and that the former president agreed to raise Kanu’s case with President Bola Tinubu. That meeting, however, was separate from the alleged prison visit.
What is disputed is whether the photograph genuinely shows a visit by Jonathan to Kanu. Legit.ng found no credible report or confirmation from Jonathan’s representatives, Kanu’s legal team, government authorities or reputable media that such a visit occurred. Two AI-detection tools also produced different results, so the image analysis alone isn't conclusive. However, based on the absence of independent evidence, Legit.ng concluded that the claim that Jonathan visited Kanu in prison is false.
