Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has approved ₦3.659 billion for pensions, gratuities and death benefits covering 1,339 retirees and eligible families. The payment covers both the Defined Benefit and Contributory Pension Schemes. The latest release brings the administration’s reported pension payments since May 2023 to ₦21.455 billion, benefiting 9,683 people.
The background is a wider effort by the Kaduna government to address outstanding pension liabilities and make future payments more predictable. Of the latest amount, ₦515 million is allocated to 210 local-government retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme, while ₦3.144 billion is for 1,129 beneficiaries under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The main issue is whether these repeated interventions will substantially clear Kaduna's accumulated pension obligations. Earlier this year, pensioners welcomed a separate ₦4.289 billion payment but noted that outstanding entitlements remained. The latest announcement therefore represents another significant payment, while the wider question of how much pension debt remains and how quickly it can be cleared is still relevant.
